Each year millions of birds fly south for the winter, many along the California coast and central valley. Lodi is one such spot (easy to get to from the SF Bay Area) where you can see one of the largest birds in North America during the winter months. I did take a tour and I loved it. In addition to the Sandhill Crane's the birders I was with pointed out many other species; raptors, songbirds, shorebirds, etc. that were all in the area at sunset. Tours have permission from private land owners to take limited groups on their property. Which is nice, it's quiet, there are no cars, some have bird blinds and sheltered seating. You too can go, and without much hassle or spending a huge amount of money. Start with the address above and the URL below. Don't forget to bring your binoculars and camera!
