Wings Over Whales
How big is a whale? About the same size as the tiny Cessna 172 that takes you on a scenic flight with Wings over Whales.

After a short safety briefing, the pilot gives an introduction to why Kaikoura is such an outstanding place for marine life, and some of the species that might be spotted: the resident pods of sperm whales and dusky dolphins, fur seals, enormous albatrosses, occasional orcas, and humpback whales passing through on route from Tonga to the Antarctic. Then we take to the air for a 30 minute flight, circling over the peninsula and bay, with the backdrop of the stunning Seaward Kaikoura mountain range. Two sperm whales spotted, but even without whales the flight would have been a highlight of my holiday.

Wings over Whales is based at Kaikoura Airport, 8km south of town. As well as the Cessna 172 which can take up to 3 passengers, they have a Gippsland G8 Airvan for larger groups.
