For a hazy moment I wondered if I was in a red-wine induced daydream. The starkly beautiful mountains that scraped the heavens seemed to seamless slide to earth forming the verdant rolling vineyards below. The rock face glowed in the setting sun. Then there was the unmistakable sound of a bottle opening and the sight of a generous splash of red - senses that had become very familiar. Everything was perfect - too perfect in fact that I questioned if it was reality. This was the third and final winery to cap off a day of exploring the region's best, from touring the boutique wine caves of Chamonix in Franschhoek to tasting at the world-renowned cellars in Stellenbosch (and feasting on one of the best meals I've ever had somewhere in between). All this was organized by Wine Escapes, with John artfully guiding us through the day and the experience. Fueled by John's passion, knowledge and good humour, with every swirl, sniff and sip - paired with a postcard-perfect vista - and with every one of my questions he answered, I grew to love wine more and more.
