Though it enjoys expansive views of the Pohutu Geyser, Whakarewarewa is more than just another thermal area: It is home to the Tuhourangi-Ngati Wahiao people. As residents of the only geothermal Maori village, they perform the haka war dance as part of a cultural show twice daily. Tribe members offer educational tours and hangi meals, steamed in geothermic vents. Got tattoo envy? Head to the village's tā moko artist for a personalized design. (The Maori's swirling tribal body art tells a story about its wearer.)
