Lakewood is a great place to call home, but there's not much to do if you're just a visitor, so I was pleasantly surprised to discover the West San Gabriel River Walk. It's a one-mile trail from Del Amo Blvd. to Carson Street, set between the San Gabriel River and a corridor of power lines. The gravelly path is bordered by tall shady trees and native shrubs and is popular with dog walkers (most dogs are off-leash). Alongside the river, the path's fence is low enough to climb over, and we walked down the steep concrete bank to the water, where we got a close up look at ducks, egrets and herons. There's parking at Monte Verde Park, or you can also enter the path at Del Amo or Carson.
