West Edmonton MallIf you are under the mistaken impression that the Mall of America is the world's largest, it's not. In fact it's not even the largest in North America, with that distinction going to the West Edmonton Mall. The enormous complex measures in at 5.3 million square feet and includes a hotel, water park, a National Hockey League regulation size ice-skating rink, and some 800 different stores and services. Until 2004, it was the world's largest mall, though it now comes in at somewhere between the 5th and 10th spots, depending on what metric is used to measure the malls' size.
Normally a mall wouldn't be on my list of sights to see, but for its sheer scale, the West Edmonton one is worth a detour. An estimated 32 million visitors each year agree with me. You'll find "streets" inspired by famous ones around with the world, like a Bourbon Street lined with bars and restaurants and with its food court, amusement park, movie theater and other attractions, it offers plenty to keep you busy, especially if you are in Edmonton on a bitter cold winter day and looking for shelter from the elements.
