For many people, The Bridges Of Madison County started a lifelong love affair with covered bridges, me included. It brings to mind a slower, simpler time when life was easier and things weren't as rush, rush. But with progress comes change, and old fashioned two lane covered bridges can hardly keep up with traffic expectations of today's modern cities. Here in Oregon, they boast having the largest collection of covered bridges in the West, with 51 of the originally constructed 600 bridges still in existence. Many of them are in park-like settings, and will never see more than pedestrians and bicycles travel down their paths again. But even as you stroll from end to end, peering out to the river below, you can almost get the feeling of being transported back in time.
