Wawona
This tiny town at the southern entrance of the park offers respite for those seeking to escape the teeming crowds of Yosemite Valley, about 30 miles away. The Big Trees Lodge (until recently known as the historic Wawona Hotel) harkens back to its Victorian beginnings in 1876, when it was built to house visitors to the nearby Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias. Nearly all the 104 rooms at the hotel, named a National Historic Landmark, open out to the large wrap-around verandas and views of the gardens and beyond. Attractions include the visitor center, originally the art studio of Thomas Hill, whose works are on display from May-October, and the Pioneer Yosemite History Center (open year-round), where Yosemite’s past comes to life with horse-carriage rides and other activities.
