The Best of Summer Fun Can Be Found at a Woodchucks GameIn the heat of summer, when the sun feels like a thick blanket across green lawns and outstretched trees, there’s nothing like a baseball game to act as a welcome distraction.
The Wisconsin Woodchucks, the hometown team of Wausau—a city of about 40,000 nearly three hours from Minneapolis—relish in that ready attention by providing the easy entertainment of this classic summer sport. Crowds cheer for safe bases and hard-earned scores, and play along to games that start and end between innings. And aside from filling up on appropriate hot dogs and cheese curds, there’s also a shaded beer garden featuring some of the state’s best offerings in left field.
Come for a visit during the Fourth of July holiday, which promises entertainment whether or not the team is facing a willing foe. A local band performs classic rock, rain or shine, and kids are encouraged to play on a covered jungle gym nearby. When the sun finally dips below the horizon, visitors can take to the stands to watch a fireworks show that’s set up in the outfield. It may still be warm at that time, but when colorful sparks are bursting right overhead, the effect is much like baseball: It’s easier to sit back and simply enjoy the show.
