When I went to Haines, Alaska, the people seemed to be completely confounded by the idea of a tourist who wasn't traveling with a cruise ship. The in town tourism offices and attractions never really seemed to know what to do with a solo traveler.
Still, every one I met was incredibly kind and quite friendly, even if they couldn't recommend a restaurant. When I wandered out to the farmers' market in the rain, one of the residents was kind enough to drive me back to my hotel. On our way, she swung by this waterfall where she picked up some water to take along with her. It tasted great.
If you go, make sure to go to the Hammer Museum, which is fascinating, and take time to wander the town.
