Located at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay, Norfolk isn’t the world’s largest naval port for nothing. You can soak up water views while biking or strolling along the 10.5-mile Elizabeth River Trail. It skirts the Elizabeth River, cuts through the heart of historic Norfolk, and crosses Hampton Boulevard over Lafayette River. Highlights along the way include Town Point Park, historic Fort Norfolk, the USS Wisconsin, and Plum Point Park. If sitting on a dock by the bay is more your speed, then Ocean View Fishing Pier is the perfect place to perch and cast a line or two (there are fishing rod rentals onsite). The pier’s bar and grill also happens to serve up a fine crab cake sandwich. For a grand tour of the harbor, set sail with the American Rover. The two-hour sail boat cruise lets passengers take a turn at the helm while the captain points out historic sites—and maybe even a dolphin or two.
