A local Okinawan bar with amazing hospitalityWatanji is a small izakaya (Japanese bar) tucked away on a side street in Naha. It’s clearly a favorite with locals, and we were the only tourists in the place. Our Okinawan friend had selected this place especially for our first night as it’s super authentic and has great servers.
The food was indeed amazing, but the best part was the hospitality. None of the staff spoke English (which wasn’t a big problem in our group), but they loved having tourists in their bar. They gave us extra dishes and kept coming by to ask us how we liked the different things we tried. It felt like we were regulars in our favorite bar, kicking it with the owner.
If you don’t speak any Japanese at all, this might be a slightly difficult spot as they don’t have an English menu. However, if you do speak Japanese or don’t mind leaving it all up to the chef, this is a great spot to hang out in Naha.
