I reccommend timing your arrival at Doi Suthep about 30 minutes before the sun goes down. That way you can watch the golden hues of the temple change with the fading light. Stick around to see the monks gather for an evening chant, and then wander the grounds that overlook the city of Chiang Mai in the distance. My other two cents? Take the tram up, but when you leave, walk down the steps and meander through the little street market at the base to find snacks. My favorite was the mashed, sticky sweet rice cooked inside of tubes of bamboo!
