Wat Phonexay

Tears For The Fallen
This temple was a place of prayer for victory in battle for the Vientiane kings. The last one, Chao Anouvong, probably prayed here before leading his ill-fated rebellion against the Siamese. The Siamese subsequently leveled the city, destroyed all of the temples (except one), dispursed most of the population across the Mekong and looted everything they could carry. This temple has been rebuilt and there are still some fallen Buddha images from when it was ransacked.
