Go check out the Reclining Buddha at Wat Lokaya Suttharam on the west side of the inner island portion of the ancient city, and former Thai capital, Ayuttaya. The complex at this wat was leveled during a war with the invading Burmese, so all that remains is the impressive Buddha and a single stupa. The Buddha measures 37m long by 8m high and is usually draped in a large marigold sarong, which is almost blinding in the tropical midday sun. Devotees come to to offer flowers and incense as well as paste gold leaf to the statue itself in order to earn merit. The main sites, including the Reclining Buddha, are best explored by renting a motor scooter and purchasing a map of the city.
