Salt Creek Recreation Area, Washington, USAThe town of Forks in Clallam County is celebrated by fans of the Twilight Saga for being the town where Bella and Edward met. However locals have been descending on this town for centuries before the franchise was written, namely to visit the spectacular beauty spot Salt Creek.
The recreation area itself is vast, covering around 196 acres and was at one point a World War II military camp. Incredibly there are still remnants of bunkers used in the war hidden in the surrounding forest, making a great game of hide and seek for kids and an area of exploration for history buffs.
A vast array of people come here, the old and the young, couples in love or soloists just looking for a sanctuary of calm. The main beach has soft, buttery yellow sand, clear green water, and is great for sea kayaking and surfing. Even more exciting though, is wading through the beautiful tide pools filled with coral and starfish under the pale pink and blue sky.
The creek becomes especially magical when, on occasion an eerie mist cloaks the sea and forest enveloping the land in complete stillness. If that sounds too creep for your liking take a scenic hike up to the top of nearby Striped Peak instead and camp under the stars with views across the Strait of Juan de Fuca towards Victoria in British Columbia.
