We originally planned to rent bikes to visit the wineries on Waiheke Island, but due to the threat of rain, we decided to rent a car. Unexpectedly, we ended up with a roadster with bat-wing doors (felt like it would break down at any minute, but fun nonetheless!). The rental car owner advised not to take Cowes Bay Road, which runs along the remote eastern end of the island, stating there was "nothing to see." Our gut instinct told us otherwise and we decided to make the trek anyway. Not only was it a gorgeous drive, but we came across one of the best wineries on the Island, Man O' War Vineyard. It didn't take us long to figure out why the owner advised against the road trip. It was a road of red dirt that stuck stubbornly to wheels. Well worth the adventure!
