Escape the hustle and bustle of downtown Auckland with a day trip to Waiheke Island. The peaceful little land mass has an ideal climate for growing many grapes, although you’ll find syrah and bordeaux blends at its more than a dozen wineries rather than the pinot noir and sauvignon blanc typical in other parts of the country. It’s possible to travel between wine cellars by bus, bicycle or on foot, with detours to Waiheke’s art galleries and beautiful beaches.
