Venture 40 kilometers (25 miles) into the Dhofar Mountains for a scenic afternoon at Wadi Darbat. The lusciously green valley features a system of lakes replenished each year by the khareef, or monsoon. After the rains, the landscape dries out, exposing cracked earth and fascinating rock formations. On the way back to Salālah, drop by the Tayq Sinkhole for dizzying views of a collapsed cave system. Cars share the winding road with free-roaming herds of camels, donkeys and goats, making for a sometimes dynamic descent.
