Vitória’s Metropolitan Cathedral took over 50 years to build, beginning in 1920 and lasting into the 1970s. This neo-Gothic structure was constructed on the site of the former cathedral once it was deemed too small to accommodate the growing city’s faithful. The cathedral has become an iconic symbol of the city and is especially known for its colorful stained-glass windows. Many have compared its light-colored stone spires to those of the famous Gothic cathedral in Cologne, Germany, but with a contemporary twist. The cathedral sits on a beautiful square with a fountain.
