Visiting the village of Vishnupuram outside Chennai, India
I wanted to experience village life on a trip to the metropolitan city of Chennai in India. On one such visit, I took a couple days and hired a car and driver and set off to visit a string of villages outside of Chennai.
One such village is called Vishnupuram. This village is located about 247km away from Chennai and is distinctive because it is built as an agraharam. Agraharam means there are two rows of traditional houses running north-south on either side of a road at one end of which would be a temple. Most of these traditional houses are giving way to more concrete structures but Vishnupuram was one village that I found untouched by time and technology.
I had a traditional South Indian vegetarian meal on a banana leaf in one of the traditional houses and after my lunch, wandered around the village. It's a sleepy town with not much happening but great for a lunch stop on your way to other villages.
