The Review:
Not familiar with London’s Vintry Ward neighborhood? No worries—chances are you’ve been in it. Bordered by landmarks like St. Paul’s Cathedral and London Bridge, capped by Garlic Hill, and just across the Thames from Borough Market, the centrally-located historic district was once home to the 14th-century Vintry Guild, which traded wine, and the Mercer Guild, which traded fine fabrics. Opened in February 2019, Vintry & Mercer pays tribute to its two namesake guilds with a décor that features bespoke textiles and vintage trading maps, and a beverage program that celebrates barrel-aged cocktails and fine wines. The 92 rooms are bright and design-centric, with touches like leather door handles, velvet headboards, colorful ceramic tiles, and hand-picked artwork; all have C.O. Bigelow bath products, free WiFi, Marshall speakers, walk-in showers, and Nespresso machines, while suites boast bathroom mirror-set TVs and glass-walled balconies looking out at the south bank. The three eating options include Vintry Kitchen for Asian-flavored small plates; the rooftop Mercer Roof Terrace, with indoor/outdoor seating, a charcoal oven, and a farm-to-table focus (and views for days); and the speakeasy-inspired Do Not Disturb (DND), serving shared plates and vintage cocktails in a sophisticated setting. Solar panels and a green roof are just some of the hotel’s nods to sustainability.
