The world’s largest golden-teak mansion, built in neoclassical and traditional Thai style, is a former royal villa that’s part of Dusit Palace, a compound of imperial residences. The structure was commissioned by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), one of the most influential monarchs of Siam (now called Thailand); it was he who kept Siam from being colonized. The mansion was built in 1900 on an island in the Gulf of Thailand, and then moved to Dusit Palace in 1901. Visitors may take guided tours to see antique furnishings, ceramics and royal memorabilia.
