Villa del Palmar at The Islands of Loreto

Villa del Palmar, Danzante Bay

A few weeks ago I discovered Loreto, on the coast of Baja’s pristine Sea of Cortez. Having been to the southern tip of the peninsula, I was curious to explore more of the north. Loreto is located about 6 hours by car north of Cabo’s crowds and hustle. Loreto and its surrounds are remote, quiet, and authentic–my kind of place.

After landing at Loreto’s airport and clearing customs quickly (the joys of a small airport!), we drove half hour south to Danzante Bay, to check into Villa del Palmar for a blissful three days. Arriving at the hotel took my breath away. The setting is spectacular. Views of Danzante Bay, the Sea of Cortez, the Islands of Loreto, and the Sierra de la Giganta mountain range compete for your attention, wherever you turn. Villa del Palmar and its adjoining, dramatic TPC Danzante Bay golf course occupy a raw, arresting desert terrain, complete with arroyos, cacti, mountains, jack rabbits, and pelicans. Paradise.

Activities at the hotel include margaritas on the beach, reading, snorkeling, paddle boarding, kayaking, hiking and …did I mention the margaritas? There’s plenty of ‘dolce far niente’ to be had here, including a long list of indulging spa treatments. If activity strikes you, just grab your golf clubs and head out. TPC Danzante Bay, a Rees Jones creation, is visible from almost anywhere at the resort and keeps beckoning.

Villa del Palmar is a spacious resort, which provides a well tailored guest experience for all. It’s great for families, but if you’re on a romantic get-away, or simply want to be along (me), you can find plenty of privacy away from kids ; ) The rooms and suites are comfortable, spacious and of course, perfectly air-conditioned, which allows for a welcome reprieve from Baja’s summer heat.

Danzante Bay turned out to be the perfect vacation playground, and a great basecamp for off-site adventures, such as exploring Loreto, taking a trip to Mission San Javier, or a boat ride to explore Bahía de Loreto National Marine Park.

Can’t wait to return to this place.
