Believe it or not, there's a lot to learn on a Caribbean island! Here we learned how many native tribes had settled here, we saw artifacts, and we went into a blacklight room dedicated to the bio bay. We met a summer intern from UMass who introduced us to the native sea creatures and let us hold the starfish.
The historic conservation trust was founded in recognition of the need to protect the unique archeological, physical, cultural, and ecological environment existing on Vieques. Even though this island it tiny, its history is mighty.
The trust brings scientists from around the world to Vieques to study the phenomenon of bioluminescence. It is very important for this island to remain protected, and the trust has been an active advocate to prevent light pollution, agricultural runoff, and indiscriminate development from impacting the bay and the delicate ecosystem that supports it.
