A spectacular urban waterfall, only a short hike away
Just outside of Hastings' well-preserved, historic city center is Vermillion Falls Park. Our intention was not to have our family/engagement/senior portrait taken, unlike most of the park's occupants, but to explore the Vermillion River waterfall.
A short walk along the paved trail brought us to a long wooden bridge. I looked down and was surprised to see a dramatically deep limestone gorge below. A few minutes later, we arrived at the observation deck and managed to wriggle through a Harley gang to catch a glimpse of the 35' waterfall. The view was impressive, but we wanted to get a little more up close and personal with nature.
After searching for a few seconds, we located a well-beaten path in the trees that led us along the river bank, all the way to the base of the falls. We climbed onto the slick limestone and stood for a few moments, soaking in the view, the mist and the solitude those above us didn't get to experience. Hiking down there was 15 minutes well spent.
