Forget about gondolas or water taxis: The way to see Venice like a local is by the Venice waterbus. The city's grand palazzos were meant to be approached by water, and this is the accessible and affordable way to do it. We recommend getting an all-day ticket (at Rialto or Piazza San Marco stops), if you have enough time, and sitting outside: Even in the cold it's the best place to see the glories of Venice. The service will take you through the canals and to the islands of Lido, Burano, and Murano, too.
