Venetian Castle & Walls
Iraklion, at first sight, is a bustling modern city, but dig beneath the surface and there are many reminders of the past. Many of these remains are Venetian (the island was under the control of the Italian city for many years. The Venetian Castle that overlooks the city harbour is inaccessible, but the walls that surround the old town can be explored in many places. Whilst walking around look out for the tomb of Nikos Kazantzakis, author of ‘Zorba the Greek’.
