Long after America bit into the cupcake craze, Europe is finally sinking some teeth into it. Since 2012, Amsterdammers with a sweet tooth have been getting their sugar fix at Van Ness Cupcake, in the heart of the city on Spuistraat. The tiny take-out shop is the brainchild of Vanessa Vos, who works in the IT industry Monday through Thursday, then dons her apron to pursue her passion—baking cupcakes for her shop.
Inspired by a childhood interest fueled by her mother, Vanessa bakes seven daily classics: chocolate and vanilla with and without sprinkles, marbled chocolate-vanilla, and a Red Velvet number topped with a glittery heart. On the first Sunday of every month, six new flavors are introduced, based on seasonal tastes and ingredients.
Monthly specials include winners like Maple-Bacon topped with real bacon sprinkles, Chocolate Baileys starring rich chocolate cake and Baileys Irish cream liqueur frosting, and S'more, a cookie-marshmallow base, chocolate cake, and fluffy cream frosting topped with more s’mores. Only fresh, natural ingredients are used, with no artificial flavors or preservatives. Custom orders are accepted for parties, weddings and corporate events.
Van Ness Cupcake is open Friday through Sunday, noon–6pm. You can order cupcakes and cheesecakes online and have them delivered anywhere in Holland. Or pick up your order in person, on a weekend afternoon. Walk-ins are welcome, so you can slip into a sweet dream anytime the little shop is open.
