Elqui Valley is a unique landscape, one where lush vineyards give way to a desert that is home to much of the world’s astronomical infrastructure (namely observatories). Even if your visit doesn’t extend to evening hours, there’s plenty to see and do in the area, and an excursion to the valley, paired with a stop in the beach town of La Serena, offers a sampling of Chile‘s rich culture: from a ride through typical Andean pueblos to a taste of the local liquor at a pisco distillery.
