Utakalongalu Market, located near the main wharf in Neiafu, is a busy and atmospheric place, full of hawkers—mostly Tongan women—selling seasonal produce, from carrots and Chinese lettuce to taro and yams. If you’re not interested in buying food (or if you arrive too late, since the food stalls sell out early), you can still choose from a selection of local crafts such as woven baskets, shell jewelry and wood and bone carvings. Be aware that haggling over prices can be considered disrespectful.
