This is our friend Tshering Yangki’s grandmother (Angay) making buckwheat noodles for our supper in her wooden press. Angay had just returned from her circumnambulation of the nearby temple, spinning prayer wheels and chanting the mantra “Om Mani Padme Hung” along with her neighbours. She also taught us how to distill ara (the local hooch) and to weave cloth in her solid stone house in the medieval village of Ura, Bumthang. Angay put us up in the family shrine room for the night with Lord Buddha and some local dieties to watch over us by the light of votive candles. Tashi Delek Angay!
