In 1999 Brazilian businessman and bibliophile José Mindlin commissioned his grandson Rodrigo Mindlin Loeb and his friend Eduardo de Almeida to design a library for what Mindlin referred to as “The largest and most important private collection in Brazil.” The architects designed their library on the University of São Paulo campus. They built it to be as sustainable as possible, with UV-filtered skylights to illuminate the building and maintain indoor temperatures. The 22,000-square-meter complex was inaugurated in March 2013 and holds more than 60,000 volumes.—Miranda Smith
