Underpenny is literally one of LIC’s hidden gems because it is tucked beneath an old tenement house. It could easily be missed if it weren't for the handwritten “open” sign placed precariously atop a pile of trinkets outside. However, if you follow the sign, walk down a few steps, and duck your head to avoid hitting the door frame, you’ll find yourself inside a secret treasure trove.
Overflowing with rare art, sculptures, jewelry, and most notably, a large collection of 19th century cast-iron pieces, Underpenny will transport you back in time and induce instantaneous nostalgia. Keep in mind, though, that everything on the right-hand side of the store is merely for show–a museum of sorts, curated by owner and collector Sung Park–whereas everything on the left is open for the picking.
