The two most famous and popular beach cities in Texas are Galveston and South Padre Island, about 6 1/2 hours from one another along the Texas shore. Start in Galveston and enjoy a few days in this historic city. Walk the Strand (seen here), lined with shops, art galleries, and bars that have a mix of influences, from country western to Bob Marley with many of them offering a unique mix of cowboy and reggae. Once you make it to South Padre, there are a plethora of hotels and vacation rentals, along with opportunities for beach camping if you want to sleep with the ocean’s waves just beyond your tent. Beaches are considered Texas public highways, so all licensed vehicles are allowed to drive on them, with the exception of on dunes or grasslands. Pack your suit, plenty of sunscreen, and a cooler, and you’ll be set to explore the Lone Star State’s shore.
