A Peaceful Park with Buried Treasures

This park would be a pleasant city oasis even if it weren't also a fascinating historical site. The hills that you stroll around are actually tumuli, burial mounds for the elite of the Shilla dynasty, which made the city of Gyeongju its capital for about a thousand years. You can go inside one of the mounds and see a re-creation of a burial and displays of the intricately crafted metalwork and jade jewelry that accompanied the dead. We went in the evening, when the light on the mounds was golden. There's a small admission fee (1,500 won when we went) to enter the park.
