Tsushima Maru Memorial Museum

1 Chome-25-37 Wakasa, Naha-shi, Okinawa-ken 900-0031, Japan

This poignant museum is centered around the tragic story of the Tsushima Maru, a Japanese ship sunk by an American submarine during World War II. Unbeknownst to the submarine crews, the ship was carrying hundreds of schoolchildren, around 775 of whom were killed in the attack. Because of an official cover-up of the event, it only became public knowledge some two decades later. The event is commemorated here via a detailed chronology, a movie, a replica classroom and individual photos of the children.
