Trollstigen
Creeping its way up a cliff face via eleven hairpin bands, Trollstigen (the Troll’s Path) replaced an ancient hiking trail that linked Åndalsnes with the Valldal valley. The highlight as you ascend the single-track road is the old stone bridge crossing the Stigfossen waterfall, which tumbles over 1,000 feet. While the drive is a memorable one, it’s the modern visitor center atop the mountain that sticks in the memory. Wooden footpaths and three viewing platforms allow you peer over the edge onto the racetrack-like road and lush valley below. Due to snow, the road is closed from October to mid-May, with exact dates varying each year.
