Many people don’t want you to know about Wallisville, outside Houston, and its Heritage Park. But the secret’s out. Before you mosey down the river, step into the town’s museum for a smidgen of culture. There, peruse a cache of artifacts from the Spanish mission, Nuestra Señora de la Luz. On the Trinity River, moderate rapids push you through cypress and pine-studded terrain for nearly seven, entertaining miles. Take a break at the Trinity River Island Recreation Center, where rangers offer maps and information to enhance your visit to the area. Bring your lunch, and picnic at Lake Charlotte.
