Divers descend upon the city of Townsville to scuba the wreck of one of Australia’s most intriguing maritime mysteries, the SS Yongala, which sunk in 1911 and is now home to an underwater menagerie of turtles, rays, giant groupers, sea snakes, and clownfish. Kids and landlubbers need not fret, however; many of the same creatures live at the Reef HQ Aquarium back in town. Regular bazaars such as the Cotters Market every Saturday and the first Friday Strand Night Market introduce visitors to the area’s arts, crafts, foods, and entertainers. And just off the coast, Magnetic Island offers an interesting mix of military history and wildlife such as wild koalas.
