Designated a French Historical Monument, the Toulon Cathedral (formally the Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-la-Seds de Toulon) includes art and architectural features spanning nearly a millennia of history. Begun in 1096, it retains portions of the original 11th-century nave while the current facade, restored in the early 19th century, was completed in 1701. The clock tower, with its iron campanile, was completed in 1740. Inside, the cathedral has a Pierre Puget-designed Baroque retable of twisted columns, gilded motifs and heavenly figures held aloft by billowing stone clouds.
