Kabuki! Tokyo Japan

While visiting Tokyo, I was really happy to attend a traditional Kabuki performance at the Shimbashi Enbujo Theatre. I bought my tickets online before my arrival in Japan (at the box office, you must present the credit card that you purchased the tickets with).

The typical performance is quite a long affair, usually 4.5 hrs, but they do sometimes have other ticket options, with single act tickets or variety acts. The theater does offer English Earphone-Guide rental service to aid in appreciating the performance, and the dialogue is closely timed to the stage performance. There is an intermission, and you can buy food there, but it's expensive. I would recommend just buying a bento from a convenience store and bringing it with you. The audience eats during intermissions, either at their seats or on the seats in the hallways.

Lastly, if you're just learning to navigate the Tokyo subway system, leave earlier for this venue! I got a bit turned around as I got off at the wrong stop and was lucky enough to run into a local who spoke English and who was equally kind enough to guide me there.
