Toki Underground

1234 H St NE, Washington, DC 20002, USA

Drawing on the concept of a Hakata Ramen shop, where he worked in for a year in Taipei, Taiwan, chef-owner Erik Bruner-Yang has made Toki one of the coolest additions to the emerging H Street scene in northeast Washington, D.C. Edgy, hip, scruffy, and loud is his vibrant take on Asian Street culture with skateboards and cartoon figurines. The food is hearty, fresh, and simple, with generous amounts of ramen. Choose from five types of ramen bowls as well as five dumpling flavors and a variety of Asian-style cocktails, beers, and sake. Pictured above is the “Taipei Curry Chicken” bowl with its curry-infused Tonkotsu triple stock with five spice fried chicken. Also, definitely go for the “Toki Classic” topped with chasu pulled pork. After finishing my bowl and talking to my server, she sold me on the dumplings. Go for the beef and pork! Tip: Best time to go is between 5 and 6pm (closed Sunday). Usually anytime after that, expect a long wait. After all, it is only a 25-seat restaurant.
