Tilikum CrossingPortland’s newest bridge, Tilikum Crossing is a striking addition to the city’s skyline. The prospect of another bridge across the Willamette in a place already known as Bridgetown was no small feat. Completed in 2015, the car-free span (that’s right, it’s limited to pedestrians, bikers, and the MAX light-rail) links the South Waterfront, home to Oregon Health & Science University and the massive Zidell Yards project, to the Central Eastside. The 1,720-foot suspension bridge, which derives its name from the Chinook word for people, is lit by 178 LED modules at night and includes osprey nesting poles at both ends and a conductor that amplifies noises from the river, serving as an aural art installation.
