Most visitors to Berlin tend to visit City West’s famous Zoologischer Garten if they want a day at the zoo. But a lesser-known choice lies on the other side of the city, away from the City West’s hustle bustle in the much quieter east. In fact the Tierpark was the main zoo of East Berlin during the GDR years, and covers an impressive 160 hectares. Hosting some 900 different species, the zoo’s highlights include a snake farm and, if reptiles aren’t your cup of tea, a Vari forest and Tropical Hall are home to tropical species.
