Artist Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844) grew up in Copenhagen
but spent most of his career in Rome
, where there was huge demand for his neoclassical sculptures. His tomb for Pope Pius VIII is the only piece by a non-Italian artist to have been commissioned for St. Peter’s Basilica. He returned to Denmark as a hero, and visiting this museum dedicated to his works is like stepping back into the 19th century.
