In the heart of downtown, Virginia’s impressive capitol building is surrounded by grassy Capitol Square. Thomas Jefferson designed the Roman temple–style building, flanked by later wings. Tours are offered hourly—a highlight is Houdon's heroic statue of George Washington in the lofty Rotunda. Picnic-worthy Capitol Square is also home to the neoclassical Governor’s Mansion, a bell tower, and statues of notable Virginians. It’s ringed by the Victorian Gothic Old City Hall, the handsome Italianate Custom House, and St. Paul’s Church, where Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee worshipped during the Civil War.
