The Thief
You’d be forgiven if you stepped into this bold design hotel and thought you’d mistakenly entered one of the many art galleries in the trendy Tjuvholmen neighborhood. At any given time The Thief’s public spaces display works from such notables as Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman, Jeff Koons, Richard Prince or Charles Ray. In fact, the hotel’s art-loving billionaire owner, Petter Stordalen, is a sponsor of the nearby Renzo Piano-designed Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, which allows him to “borrow” from its collection to exhibit in the hotel. (Bonus: your room key grants you free admission to the museum). In addition, the former director of Norway’s National Museum of Art was in charge of collecting original artwork from international and local artists for all 118 of the hotel’s rooms and suites. The rooms – all with floor-to-ceiling windows – are warm and rich-looking without being fussy, using contrasting neutral colors with opulent gold accents; amenities include interactive TVs showing “art on demand,” his-and-hers Norwegian wool slippers, woolen blankets for wrapping up on the balcony, down comforters. The Thief’s commitment to art also extends to music: Twice a month, the hotel hosts musicians (mostly Scandanavian) to perform acoustic sets in its lounge or, in summer, the rooftop bar with its gorgeous views over the city.
