The Woolston area of Christchurch was home to many leather tanneries in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and one of those sites has been transformed into a Victorian-style arcade for boutique shopping, dining and entertainment. Starting with Cassels and Sons Brewing Company's brewery, the Tannery gradually opened after the Christchurch earthquakes, and several local businesses displaced by the damage, like Smith's Bookshop, have relocated there. It's become a new destination for unique fashion, gifts and art, inspired by the past but thinking of the future.
