The S Curves
Around 18 kilometers east of Tracy Arm’s elbow, the S turns begin. Vessels have to slalom through these tight bends—an especially impressive feat of seamanship for large cruise ships. Here, it’s easy to see why naturalist John Muir rhapsodized about this fjord “shut in by sublime Yosemite cliffs, nobly sculptured, and adorned with waterfalls and fringes of trees, and patches of flowers.” This novel beauty commanded “more days and years than our lives could afford,” he wrote.
